escape from alcatraz
The annual escape from alcatraz swim took place this year on June 16. They could not have picked a better day. There was
very little wind, lots of sun and 1400 swimmers. While we only tracked them on their swim from alcatraz island, afterwards
they got out of the bay, ran down the Marina Green, rode their bikes over the Golden Gate Bridge and then ran the Dipsea trail
over to Stinson Beach.
I managed to capture that magic moment when the starting gun went off and the lead swimmers took their dive into the bay.
For the next few minutes 1400 hundred swimmers dove and jumped off the California Hornblower into the bay. We followed
them across the bay to the just west of the St. Francis Yacht Club where they emerged out on the land, peeled off their wetsuits
and started their runs.
It was very magical to be on they bay with 1400 brightly colored bathing capped swimmers. The sound is something I will never forget.
